A 42-member panel of the Laureus World Sports Academy picked Federer for the top honour over a group of finalists that included golfer Tiger Woods and former Formula One champion Michael Schumacher.
Federer, the world's top-ranked tennis player, won three grand slams last year and added the Australian Open in january for his 10th career major championship.

The 25-year-old Swiss became the first sportsman to receive the award on three occasions, making off with it once again for his continued domination of men's tennis in 2006.
Russia's record-breaking pole vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva was named sportswoman of the year, and Italy won the world team of the year award after its World Cup triumph in Germany.
Tennis was the big winner at the awards ceremony with American Serena Williams taking the comeback of the year award and the breakthrough prize going to fellow tennis player Amelie Mauresmo of France following her first two grand slam titles.
Other winners included German skier Martin Braxenthaler for sportsperson of the year with a disability and Kelly Slater of the United States for action sportsperson of the year.
Barcelona Football Club were given the Spirit of Sport award for their support of UNICEF and former Germany captain Franz Beckenbauer took the lifetime achievement award. Beckenbauer won the World Cup as a player and a coach, and was the president of Germany's World Cup Organising Committee.
German mono-skier Martin Braxenthaler took the award for the sportsperson with a disability after winning gold medals in three of the four Alpine skiing disciplines at the Paralympic Winter Games in Turin.
