BUCHAREST/ Nadia Comaneci has recorded a song for children, part of an Album
released during April, album called "Music Box 6".
"It's the first time somebody ask me to record a song; I just did voice-over for gymnastics competitions before. I'm happy to do something for children and I hope they will enjoy it. I wish I could see and hear Ilie Nastase-a famous tennis player and close friend- doing this , too!"- said Nadia Comaneci with a Perfect 10 smile after she recorded the song.

General Interest

She did not just appear - she swopped down on the international gymnastics stage in 1975 at the European Championships in Skien, NOR, winning four Gold medals (Overall, Beam, Vault ans Uneven bars).

Only 13 years old, Nadia became a big star overnight. Then everybody waited eagerly to see what would happen at the 1976 Montreal Oylmpic Games. In effect, Comaneci turned these into Nadia's Gala. She scored the first perfect "ten" in the history of Olympic gymnastics (Compulsory Programme - Uneven bars). She swept the All-around title.

And after having added six more perfect scores in the process of the event she finished the Olympic competition with three Gold, one Silver and one Bronze medals. Comaneci (helped by Teodora Ungureanu) brought the Romanian team to the forefront and became an Olympic "Great", inspiring thousands of girls around the globe to take up gymnastics.

Nadia was born in the little industrial town of Onesti, at the foot of Carpathian Mountains, (population 40'000 people) in 1961. "She was a frolicsome child" says her mother. "In three years she destroyed four sofas, jumping and turning somersaults on them. She reduced them to dust. We felt relieved after we sent her to the sports hall." This happened when Nadia was 6 years old. Later on, fate put her together with coaches Bella and Marta Karoly. This famous trio rode a glorious path. Technically brilliant and mentally very strong, Nadia was born a tough competitor. In 1977 and 1978 she grew by ten centimetres (3 inches), causing her serious training difficulties. However, Nadia went on. Gone was the crowd's "tiny" darling, to be replaced by a young lady doing the gymnastics of the future.

In Moscow in 1980, she took two more Olympic Gold medals (on the Beam and Floor) and her Olympic collection totalled five Gold, three Silver and one Bronze medals (9 altogeter). Otherwise, Comaneci was more successful at European Championships (Overall titles in 1975, 1977 and 1979) than at World Championships (Gold on Beam in 1978 and with the Team in 1979). Nadia's last competiion was in the World Student Games in July 1981.

Three weeks before the fall of the Romanian Government, in the autumn of 1989, she literally walked out through borders of Romania and Hungary to start a new life in the West. She settled in the USA; married the Los Angeles Olympic Gold medallist Bart Conner in 1994 and now they run together a Gymanstics Academy and promotion company in Oklahoma. Nadia still takes part in many demonstrations and is strongly involved in children's charity.

Nadia was The Star of the 1976 Olympics in Montreal where she became the very first woman to score a perfect 10 (uneven bars) on her way to winning three Gold medals, one Silver and one Bronze. Nadia continued her dominance through the 1980 Olympics in Moscow. After defecting to the USA in November of 1989, she has regained her gymnastics shape and now performs through the world. Although she no longer wishes to discuss her dramatic defection, it is interesting, as background, that Nadia left Romania just three weeks before the fall of the Romanian Government. She literally walked through the borders of Romania and Hungary to arrive in Austria where she walked into the American Embassy. At that time their comment was "we were waiting for you". Within one and half hours she was on a plane to the USA. Today, Nadia has mastered English, understands the mannerisms of the West a little better. Her husband, Bart Conner, himself a former Olympian, sought her out some time after her arrival in America. Their romance blossomed after being friends for years. They had known each other from competition previously and had personal respect for each others abilities. Nadia speaks five languages and is active with the Canadian Quebec Agency for adopted Romanian children. She works for the Muscular Dystrophy Association through their annual Jerry Lewis Telethon and has a special interest in kids charities in general.

The living Legend of Modern Gymnastics,NADIA COMANECI

The world's first perfect gymnast

By BRUCE LOWITT

published November 10, 1999

The silence was broken only by the sounds of clicking -- hundreds of cameras capturing the moment. What they caught was perfection.

Nadia Comaneci, the 14-year-old Romanian, arched in midair for an instant on her dismount from the uneven parallel bars, then the feet supporting her 4-foot-11, 86-pound body landed softly on the mat. The silence was shattered by an explosion of cheering and applause that, after a few seconds, turned to consternation. Flashing on the electronic scoreboard was 1.00. It took a moment for the 18,000 spectators at the Forum to realize that Comaneci had, in effect, outperformed modern technology
