[Dec 8] ROC
to open a new ( & useless) gymnastics hall
The
Romanian Olympic Committee will open next week a new gymnastics
hall, at Izvorani (20 miles North Bucharest). It's the hall
which was visited, back in April, by the Olympic team and
coaches Belu & Bitang.
Back
then, their conclusion was clear: the facility needed (badly)
some corrections, including rebuilding the vault section and
even enlarge the sizes.
At first glance, gymnasts (which have had measured with their
own feet the minimum requirement sizes) have had concluded
the hall couldn't be used the way they started to build.
I seriously doubt any major changes were made, will wait for
the "Grand opening" to see if any local journalists
will ask about the changes. Knowing the (dark) powers behind
ROC, I'm afraid will never hear about this.
We
have spoken with many gymnasts and few coaches about that
strange Izvorani facility. It looks like it was mainly the
ambition of former ROC President, who wanted to gain more
control over the "Gold egg chicken". Neither gymnasts
or coaches would like to work there, the facility being build
at 20 miles (30 km) North Bucharest, in the middle of nowhere,
with no school for children or entertainment for girls which
have to travel on Sundays a lot with a bus , on the busiest
Romanian railroad (DN1) to reach their Bucharest "fun
places" -the Mall or something like this.
In the meantime, ROC pays a lousy $200 (Euros 150), pension
to Andreea
Chelaru, just increased from previous Euros 100; and this
have started only in October 2004.
Having
a huge budget to support the sport movement and the athletes
in need, the ROC have chosen (like many other Romanian public
companies) to spend an enormous amount of money to such a
project which have doubtful advantages for the athletes.
As
in many other cases in Romania, the former ROC President have
a nice (and huge) villa being build nearby, in the Snagov
tourist area.Strange coincidence, but, as I said, a common
one in (former neo-communist until 2004) Romania. All the
leaders of State owned (or funded) companies have their villas
build during the same time of large (and useless) construction
projects were funded by their organizations. Until now, no
independent audit on ROC (and affiliate Foundation) accounts
was ever announced to take place.
