Powerful (like Mercalli 7) earthquaqe
hit Bucharest
Romanian allnews TV station "Realitatea" just aired
a live Report from Vrancea county, where the earthquake have
started (all of them have the start in this region, deep at
more than 150 km and go up to surface, arriving at sruface
25 second later in Bucharest) . The specialists have estimated
the power to be more than 6 on Richter scale.
Fortunately, Ponor and Rosu are guests
of Belu, at his Bucharest villa, which is safer than
any common block. Bitang is also in Bucharest. At Deva city,
the earthquaqes are less powerful and usually not so important.
Romanian have big fears regarding the time frame 2004...-2008,
when a "Big One"is expected. Last one, back in 1977,
made more than 1500 victims and destroyed tens of blocks.
For the next major earthquaqe in Bucharest, specialists said
more than 40% of buildings can suffer serious damages.
Basically, if the second one will come, DO
NOT use the elevators to go down if you live upstairs, keep
an electric lighter handy and do NOT go back inside until
is safe to do so.
Last reports said the ground is still (slowly) moving, tens
of smaller replicas were reported. Experts have reported for
Realitatea Tv station that the movements lasted for 10 minutes
in Vrancea county (200 km North Bucharest). This night in
Bucharest is also a full moon eclipse (local time 5, 24 a.m.).
Other towns, gymnastics-related, where the
earthquake hit: Onesti city (town of national junior team),
Bacau, Focsani (Gina Gogean hometown),
Ploiesti (Corina Ungureanu and Belu hometown), Sibiu (Sabina
Cojocar hometown) and Cluj (Oana Ban hometown).
...One hour later after the earthquake have
hit Bucharest, we manage to find some working phone lines.
Deva city hall have no reports about any damages or victims. In
Bucharest, Silvia Stroescu was already back to sleep (having
university classes tomorrow),she told us that her little cat
was nervous just before the earthquake, Oana Ban was (deep)
sleeping in Cluj (400 km North Bucharest), the lights of Belu
villa in Bucharest have remained on, Catalina and Monica were
little bit scared but fine.
...Reports said that Bucharest streets were plenty of people
talking about the event and trying to calm down.
